Emergency Services and Community Safety

As well as rescuing people from fires, explosions and accidents, firefighters also have a role to play in educating the public about fire safety and prevention.  Some councils are responsible for emergency planning and disaster response.  Emergency planning officers work with the police and fire services to plan the response to possible emergencies such as terrorist attacks, severe adverse weather conditions or train crashes.

A growing area of work in local councils is that of community safety, which includes street wardens, neighbourhood watch co-ordinators and officers who work to combat anti-social behaviour.  There are also a range of staff employed  to provide support to the emergency services.
